Note: This production contains explicit language, nudity, adult situations, and simulated violence.

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Last year Warner Brothers celebrated the 40th anniversary of the monumental film, Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange”. This year the Blue Room Theatre will celebrate the 50th anniversary (yep, it’s been 50 years) of the novel by Anthony Burgess. The novel has been vilified and glorified by critics being called a “pornography of violence” by some and “A terrifying and marvelous book” by others. But this is nothing compared to the notary received by the film. It was rated X upon it’s initial release and shortly after was banned in England for 27 years. In April, the directors that brought “Sid and Nancy” to the Blue Room bring to the stage the controversial story that has gathered more fans with every generation of filmgoers. With a cast of thousands (a slight exaggeration) including the nefarious Alex, the teenager who’s primary interests include “rape, ultra-violence, and Beethoven”. A Clockwork Orange runs April 27-28, May 3-5, 10-13, 17-19, and 24-26 at 7:30pm.

The Summer Performance Projects at The Blue Room’s Young Company are 3 week day camps for kids of all ages who want a chance to be in a show!

While learning the basic skills of the Performing Arts, Young Company kids learn the true value of teamwork, self-discipline and accomplishment. As our young actors make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime, they can see things from a new perspective…from the inside looking out…out to an audience, an opportunity…a chance to show ‘em what they can do in a friendly yet challenging environment. The Blue Room’s Young Company…where the emphasis is on the the joy of collaboration.

Our Performance Projects provide kids of all ages an activity that is a physical workout! A good part of our day is spent on preparing our bodies to perform.

Our Performance Projects are an immersion in reading comprehension skills as we learn to analyze scripts in a very fun way. When kids are finding out about their character and their play’s story, the stakes are raised in their need to understand what they are reading and rehearsing.

Extreme No. 1 Improv Night is Chico’s most popular night of improvisation that doesn’t involve an annoying jam-band. A single suggestion from you, the audience member, could send these improvisers on a journey to space, to battle in the Peloponnesian War or simply to the store for a gallon of milk (did I mention the store is on fire and the milk is poison?) They do everything from short-form improv games to full-fledged one-act plays. All written, directed and acted in front of your eyes.

Here’s what the CN&R article said about us:

“For a community theater, the Blue Room has it all. It’s centrally located downtown in the historic Masonic building above Collier Hardware. It’s community-driven, with an open door to all local performers and producers to show their stuff and pitch their ideas. And it produces a wide range of challenging and fun shows—from works by modern playwrights like Christopher Shinn and Neil LaBute to rock musicals, irreverent late-night shows and regular improv, sketch-comedy and standup features—energetically performed by Chico’s best and brightest players.”
